48V Magnetic vs Mains-Voltage Track Lighting: Which to Specify in 2026
Low-voltage magnetic and mains-voltage track solve different problems. Here is the decision logic, with 2026s ultra-slim 5 mm profiles and deep dimming in view.
The question is rarely "which is better" but "which does this space need". Magnetic track moves without tools; mains track carries more power over longer runs. In 2026 both have become radically thinner and smarter.
The core difference
48V (and 24V) magnetic track uses low-voltage DC fed from a remote driver. Modules snap on and slide without rewiring — ideal where layouts change. Mains-voltage 2/4/6-wire track runs directly on line voltage; it is fixed but carries more power and supports grouped or DALI addressable control.

Secondary optics now deliver narrow, soft-edged beams with deep anti-glare grids (UGR < 19) — the precision ERCO and Targetti are known for, now at magnetic scale.
Which to choose
Choose magnetic for retail, residential and showrooms where displays move. Choose mains 4/6-wire for large commercial spaces, galleries and hotels needing grouped or DALI scene control and longer uninterrupted runs. Most projects benefit from both.

Is 48V magnetic bright enough for a shop?
Yes for accent and general zones. For very high-output window or feature walls, mains 4/6-wire track is the stronger choice; we often combine the two.
What dimming works with magnetic track?
Magnetic modules support TRIAC/0-10V on the driver side and, on our 48V lines, deep dimming down to about 1% with flicker-free performance suitable for retail studios.
